End of Line Resistors – What You Should Know

What are supervision resistors? End-Of-Line resistors (EOLR) are resistors that are used to terminate protective loops or zones found in Fire and Gas systems. A resistor is a small semiconductor which resists the flow of electrical current. What is a zone? A zone is like a circle or loop. At one point in the circle, you have the panel, and electricity will flow out and then back to the panel.

Why should you put resistors at the EOL? For commercial applications, you want to make sure you put resistors at the end of the line. If your resistor is at the panel, it is much harder to know if you have a problem with your wiring. Although there have been many conversations about placing resistors at the control panel, doing so does nothing to supervise the wiring. If you want it to work properly, put your resistors at the end of the line, or at the device.

If a potential burglar were to gain access to the zone wiring, the wires could be deliberately shorted, allowing the burglar access to the building at a later time. Putting resistors in the panel is the hallmark of a lazy technician. This leads to liability which nobody wants. When installed the correct way, all parties are protected.
